The Bubble Lamp by George Nelson is known as a timeless collector’s item, especially appreciated by admirers of the Midcentury design. Yet the famous lamp shade is not restricted to only one interior design style.
Introducing the Bubble Lamp in 1952, Herman Miller made a statement. The modern, characteristic form combined with the soothing light was a novum. Likewise the exceptional material use, which was so far used by the US military: A soft but durable plastic is spray-coated around a steel wire frame and thus creates a diffuse play of light that is universally effective.
The original design was based on Swedish silk pendants, but Nelson needed a different material for the production of the Bubble Lamp. He was finally inspired by ships treated with "self-woven plastic". So, the iconic design classic was born by chance. Today's Bubble Lamps are manufactured in all versions according to the original design by George Nelson. It is no surprise that the family of lamps became part of the permanent exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
